Our mission is to cure hereditary childhood blindness and other vision disorders, and to improve the lives of visually impaired individuals and their families.

To make progress toward this objective, VOC has 5 immediate goals:

  • To collect, edit, and disseminate information about the detection, incidence, and treatment of diseases or conditions that either severely impair vision or cause total blindness in children.
  • To stimulate academic researchers to pursue therapies for these rare conditions and to apply technologies developed in other disease categories.
  • To foster the creation of a panel of diagnostics based on DNA probes for the principal hereditary diseases affecting vision.
  • To make parents and medical practitioners aware of the warning signs of ocular diseases in newborns, so as to enable earlier and more effective intervention.
  • To serve as a portal to lead the families of blind and visually impaired children to other organizations and service providers who specialize in providing ongoing support to such families.
